I need to find a unique gift that isn't too expensive for a business mentor/friend of mine. (I am on a budget, but it needs to be a quality gift all the same. I want to keep my gift at or below $100.) I don't know him very well, but I want to purchase a thoughtful, quality gift. I don't want to send a gift basket--I'm looking for something really useful, classy, and unique. The only website I can think to search is Red Envelope--I also looked at the Metropolitan Museum of Art's online store.
Have any of you gotten a really great and thoughtful gift from a business associate? Or have you bought a really great gift for one? Please tell me about it.
About my recipient:
He lives in NYC, is in his 50's, and is currently helping me develop my career. He is opening doors for me like no one else has before, so I need to thank him with a special gift.
Can you help me find the right thank you gift?
As an artist, I always lean towards recommending a one-of-a-kind small piece of practical artwork, or an original piece that you know he would like. I have seen some beautiful handmade moneyclips, inlaid knives, carved wooden or stone pens, etc. Or a small sculpture for his office, a framed painting or photo of a subject he likes. An object like that is likely to be treasured for what it is, and for the fact it came from you.
Another great idea is an antique reference book, or antique print. I live in Hudson, NY, 2 hours north. The other day I saw some great prints for sale here in town, from artists who first came to America and documented the landscape. These sketches, watercolors, etc. woudl make great gifts! I also saw framed maps of early NYC settlements, historical photos, etc.

Reply:I agree that you don't want something cheesy. Do you know something he likes? Sometimes you can get something that is related to a hobby, or an interest (such as a nice print or something). My favorite gift is a nice pen. For $100 you can get a pretty good one.
Reply:this might seem goofy but how about a fruit of the month club basket. I lived in NY and in December when there is lots of snow it would be cool to get some California Strawberry's, or oranges, or better yet avocados. With a monthly gift it could be like say thank you over and over again, and a big plus is he will have a good thought about you each month, because everyone likes to get presents. A great gift is to be taken to Tavern on the Green, or to Radio City Music Hall any time.

Reply:A subtle coloured engraved desk set. I received one from a student I had 20 years ago and it has taken pride of place on every business desk I have had since!
Very thoughtful of you. With an attitude like this you will go far in life.
Good luck to you. The thought DOES count! KC UK.
Reply:Well, you can always give him a really nice pen set, a box of nice embroidered hankies that are monogramed with his initials, a nice piece of art that you know that he will like. A nice stationary set. Hope this gives you some good ideas. You could even give him the stionary and pen set together. Good luck.
Reply:wine is always a great thank you gift...both simple and sophisticated.
Reply:a pen set or a watch would be the perfect gift for a mentor. If you decide to go in for a pen set that see whether you can get one wher you can inscribe a personal message!
