im wanting to start baking and making desserts to sell out of my home. what do i need to do to be able to do this without getting into trouble with the law. im small right now, ive only had a couple small orders. do i need a food handlers license? i also sell gift baskets that contain baking ingredents, do i need a license to do this since it also involves food?
What do i need to start my own business?
You probably need licenses from a half dozen governmental organizations depending where you live. If I were you I'd go ahead and do what you want to do and not worry about it until you see where this is going. This is called "flying below the radar". The worst thing that will happen if you get busted is that you'll get a letter that tells you to immediately cease and desist until you get a license. At that point you can decide what to do.
Incidentally, this is the way most small businesses start. As they grow they "tighten" things up.

Reply:You may need a license and all the government requirements. You are selling food; safety for the people are government's concern. Wherever you processed the goods, it may need to be inspected by the Food Department and those legal men out there!
Thanks!
