Suggestions for a gift basket? My grandpa is undergoing kemo and I want to get him a thoughtful practical gift

My grandpa is on kemo for prostate cancer. He's not nauseous and still has his appetite, but is diabetic- so sending sweets is out. He is so weak and tired- I live in NY and he's in Idaho- I can't be there to care for him but want to show him I still care so much- Do you have any thoughtful practical gift ideas?

I call weekly to talk and tell him I love him- I just want to give something tangible that can help him feel better...

i think i should give my grandma something too- she's going through soo much right now with him being sick... (they just had their 60th aniversary!)

I just read the best book: Kitchen Table Wisdom: Stories that Heal by Rachel Naomi Remen. It is a national best seller and it's not hard to see why. This author is a doctor, a counselor (for cancer patients), and a patient herself (has suffered from a chronic condition since her teens). This book is a collection of short 1- to 2-page stories that are so inspiring. I couldn't put it down ("I'll read just one more...okay, no, just ONE more...") I highly recommend it for any cancer patient. Many of the stories are cancer-related. The good news is you can purchase this book on Amazon in like new condition for $6-$8 (including shipping). If your grandfather enjoys reading even a little, this would be the perfect thing to send: inexpensive, easy to ship, and extremely uplifting/inspiring.

As far as your grandmother... I watched my sweet mother-in-law selflessly care for her cancer-stricken husband for over 3 years. I remember wanting to do something to help too, so I gave her a certificate for a day spa - to help her relax and rejuvenate. She used it to get a pedicure. She told me it was heavenly - just what she needed.

Best wishes to your grandparents!
Reply:I'm so glad to hear that helped! FYI - The copy of the book that I got just happened to be a large-print version. For an older person wiped out from chemo, that might be the way to go - definitely easier to read. So now you know that that particular book is available in large print. Good Luck! Report It
Reply:ok i know how you feel because my dad has been going thru kemo and cancer treatment for 5 years now. And he is a diabetic so i know how limited it can be.

He will most likely be sleeping alot so puzzle books are ok. Also any books he might like to read and videos are good too.

With stuff to eat you need to watch the suger and carbs (carbs turn to sugar. the adkins diet is designed for diabetics so you can search that for help too). sugar free candy and cookies are good. also he will need alot of vitamins, because kemo takes alot of them out. so maybe a bottle of vitamins suppliments and bottles of water. my dad use to eat alot of soups when he was doing his kemo.

you can also send him a little get well teddy bear or stuffed thing that he can look at.

for your grandma. find a pic of her %26amp; your grandpa. like a old one on there wedding day or something like that. you can go to walmart or someplace like that and you can get a pillow or a cup, ect with the pic on it. she would love it.

good luck
Reply:Books with crossword puzzles and sudoku puzzles, magazines on an activity he likes (fishing, boating, hunting etc), snacky things like peanuts, pretzles. A dvd or two in his taste. Pictures of you and any siblings in frames. A nice letter or note letting him know how you feel. Hand held games video games, like poker or those types.
Reply:When my mom was in the hospital, we gave her a picture frame that was recordable.

a talking picture.

We put a picture of her grandkids in the frame and then we recorded their little voices wishing her to get better fast and that they missed her.

That turned out to be one of her most cherrished possessions ever.

Kemo usually takes away their appetite so maybe something that will help stimulate that and also if you get books or crosswords or something--be kind and get LARGE PRINT versions. Plants are not usually allowed in hospitals anymore. only MYLAR balloons.
Reply:Fruit, hard candy, magazines, or mabe fruit on one side and a nice plant of some kind on the other.
